Superalloy Overview

Superalloys, or high-performance alloys, exhibit excellent mechanical strength and creep resistance at high temperatures, good surface stability, and corrosion and oxidation resistance.  As a result of Superalloy metals ability to retain most of their strength even after long exposure times above 650°C (1,200°F), Superalloys are frequently used in chemical and petroleum plants, gas turbines and jet engines. Their versatility stems from the fact that they combine this high strength with good low-temperature ductility and excellent surface stability.

A superalloy's base alloying element is usually nickel, cobalt, or nickel-iron.
